Remember a couple days ago when I said that Ryan and I were gonna fly the coop? Well, on Wednesday, we loaded up the Brave Little Toaster with food, beer and the pup and headed out East towards the Superstition Mountains for a little day trip.
We planned to drive up the Apache Trail through the Superstition Mountains to Roosevelt Lake. Our first stop was Goldfield Ghost Town, the Valley's "only authentic ghost town". I'm pretty sure about eleventymillion towns in Arizona boast the same title.
It was really picturesque, and it was such a perfect Arizona sunny day.
Well, until Eva had to drop a deuce in the middle of town square. In front of families and old folks and business owners. Who ever heard the like?!
The building above is the Bordello. I guess it used to be what we western folks call a "whore house", but now it's a "museum" that sells fancy hats. I don't understand the correlation?
Arizona is littered with old mining towns, where copper mining was used to support our state's commerce in the early days. In the Superstitions, though, gold mining was the big draw. There's even a popular legend in AZ about the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine...purportedly, there's still a HUGE gold mine nestled in the Superstitions that people try to find every single year. Not to be a debbie downer or anything, but none of them have found the infamous mine. Aaaaand many of them have died.
So Goldfield Ghost Town is one of those long-forgotten gold mining towns.
Now, it's a place where you can buy jalapeno flavored jelly, drink locally brewed beer and sit on rickety chairs next to cowboy mannequins that have robot voices.
Has anyone ever figured out why Arizonans like talking cowboy mannequins so much? I swear, they're in every single tourist town here.
We then headed on our way and stopped at Canyon Lake for a photo op.
Wouldn't you?
And as we progressed onto the 33 miles of unpaved road, Eva realized that she DID NOT enjoy the bouncy, winding trail. Above is how she sat for much of the 33 miles.

When we finally arrived at the lake, we sprawled out on a blanket on our own private section of beach and relaaaaaaaaaaxed.
And, of course, enjoyed a well-deserved beer.
| What Vogue covers would look like if hillbillies ran the magazine. |
Even our aquaphobic pooch ventured into the water!
| Oh, y'know, just Sasquatchin' around. |
The lake brought out Ryan's inner wilderness, apparently.
On the way home, we drove through Payson and treated ourselves to dinner at Chili's. It was a truly magical day and we promised ourselves that we'd do this more often.
When was the last time YOU got outta dodge?

What a fun day! The lake looks beautiful. I need to take more day trips cause there are so many gorgeous places to go around here. I have a couple different visitors coming in June, so I know I'll be up in Napa at least twice next month. :) But Santa Cruz is only an hour and 15 mins or so away, Monterey nearby . . . so many options!
ReplyDeleteThat brothel is amazing! In college I lived in the funkiest old house that we all swore must have been a "whore house" and I LOVED it! A long hallway flanked with tiny bedrooms, no living space, at least 3 locks on each door AND a sink in all the bedrooms... weird huh!?
ReplyDeleteThe mister and I went to Payson once and had so much fun but we've never ventured out to the Superstition mountains... however after looking at your pictures I definitely know where we're going on our next adventure! It's gorgeous and it looks like you two had a blast!!

The photos of Canyon Lake are especially lovely. I used to go sailing at Lake Roosevelt with an old boyfriend a couple decades ago but I've never been to that ghost town, looks fun.

what a beautiful day!!!! This looks amazing and I love how the wilderness is so different than ours up here. My family rented an RV when I was in middle school and we did the whole SW tour for 3 weeks in the summer- Utah, AZ, etc. It was amazing and I am so happy I got to experience the touristy things like this in Arizona. I LOVE ghost towns- authentic or not. There's a ton in Montana and because my Dad is from there, I've been to a lot. They're so interesting to rummage through. Anyway, I'm glad you guys had such a great day, it looks all kinds of beautiful. And Eva's eyes in the car are so funny, wide-eyed!
ReplyDeleteI am just too jealous! This looks like so much fun! Eva is too damn funny!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had tons of fun! I hate those creepy cowboys... I never understand why they are everywhere!
ReplyDeleteHahah! I looove the photo of you standing in the water - and the caption is hilarious. :)
ReplyDeleteWow..that looks like a neat little place to visit! Love the water tower and the Bordello does look fancy so mabye that is the hat correlation!
ReplyDeleteI love that photo of you looking out at the lake with your hat on. So pretty!
I feel like I need to take a day trip soon. Hopefully!
My great-uncle was one of those prospectors looking for the gold in the Lost Dutchman's Mine. Lived in a shack outside of Apache Junction until he died. Never did find the gold though.
ReplyDeleteThe legend of the Lost Dutchman mine was one of my favorite stories growing up. I'm not going to lie, part of me would still love to search for it. =)
ReplyDeleteI love your car! I am jealous. and those views are amazing. Looks like perfect weather to be with the one you love!
